Mental Health and Archery, the Perfect Pair

Mental health is an unfortunately overlooked problem in the world. People equate physical health with overall health. The reality is that keeping a healthy mind is just as important as keeping a healthy body.

It may not seem like that big of a deal at first, but according to some statistics by the National Alliance on Mental Illnesses, it’s surprisingly common. One in every five adults experiences mental health issues in some form a year. Mental health issues are the third most common reason for hospitalization in the US for individuals aged 18 to 44. 18 to 22 veterans commit suicide each day. While some instances require medication, others can be resolved with healthier mental behaviors.

Some like calming activities, such as jigsaw puzzles, basket weaving, and knitting. Others prefer zone-out physical activities, such as jogging, hiking, and kayaking. While these are good ways to reduce stress, there are more stimulating options.

Archery

This is whats called a high concentration sport. As the name suggests, it’s more about mental focus than physical exertion. It requires high concentration for a short period of time. While sports, in general, are good for promoting mental health, the additional mental stimulation can leave participants feeling a sense of achievement from the hobby. The discipline also helps develop mindfulness, patience, motivation, and self-efficacy.

Many of the skills refined through archery can be applied to emergency scenarios. The steady hand and firm grip will help with medical applications, and a strong focus can help keep composure in high-stress moments of action. Not to mention its hunting applications.

If you’re looking for a bit of peace of mind, while also honing your prepper skills, why not try archery?
