Generally speaking, people want freedom. And what represents freedom less than a pair of handcuffs. Here’s how to pick your way free from one of the most common set of handcuffs there is. All you need is a bobby pin.
Before we continue, let’s make something clear. We do not condone using these skills to escape the police or other authorities. We’re not wanting people to break the law. This information is intended for if someone who means to harm you uses them to restrain you. Or as a cool party trick.
Despite being around for over 100 years. Handcuffs use a rather outdated locking system. So simple, in fact, that one of the most common models in the world, the Smith & Wesson Model 100, can be picked with relative ease using nothing but a standard bobby pin.
First things first, you need to prepare the bobby pin. If there is a rubber or plastic tip, often used to smoothen out the tip, then remove it. Then, bend the tip into two 90 degree angles. It should look like a small “Z” or a lightning bolt.
Now comes the unlocking part. Insert the bobby pin into the upper cutout of the lock. It should point in the handcuff’s direction of travel (the way that the cuff “goes in”) Once the pin is in and resting under the housing, add tension and press the pin toward the direction of travel. This will press against the unlocking mechanism and release the cuff.
Hopefully, you’ll never need to use this skill. But the day you do, you’ll be glad you know how.
